Sour Milk

I'd like to think that every mom has that one defining moment when she realizes that she is no longer concerned with herself, but rather more concerned with her little one. I think my moment happened last night!

On Monday nights, I lead a girls bible study for jr high and high school girls. Jeff and I have worked out a system where he will take Lyla to church while we are bible studying and then I go and get her while he has his "man time" at church with the guys watching the game. So after bible study, my friend Meagan and I went to get her and decided to grab a bite at the mexican restaurant in town since both of our men were at the church and we were hungry! We had just ordered when "It" happened.

I look over at sweet Lyla sitting happily in her car seat and all of a sudden, she starts spitting up. Not just your typical spit up, but projecting what seemed like everything she had eaten yesterday. I immediately grabbed her out of the seat (she was choking at this point) to try and wipe up what she was spitting out. I wasn't very successful since she was spitting up so much-I was actually trying to cup it in my hands. By the time we got to the bathroom, her outfit was SOAKED, I was SOAKED,  and her car seat was literally flooded. (are you getting the picture?) There was no changing table in the restaurant, so I made my own dragging two chairs in there (baby and diaper bag still in hand) and putting a blanket down for her. Poor girl was so sticky and I was a mess. I somehow managed to get her clean by wiping her down and completely forgot about cleaning myself up. I returned to the table with soaking wet, sour milk smelling shirt and pants. Thankfully my dinner date didn't mind. I honestly don't know what I would have done had that happen alone-it was definitely a two person job. We quickly finished our meals (I think I spoiled both our appetites) and went home only to have sweet baby girl do it AGAIN! This time while I was holding her on the couch. Again, poor Lyla was covered, I was covered, the couch was covered:( Once we (again, Meagan to the rescue) got her changed, she started up again and we just decided to keep her naked for the night. At this point, I have sour milk smell ALL over me, milk ALL down my shirt and ALL over my pants. And guess what? I didnt care. I was so much more concerned about her and if she was okay than about how nasty I was (and believe me, I was nasty) I ended up holding my little naked baby until around midnight when we finally decided she wouldn't do it again, turned the monitor on HIGH, and still went to check on her about every 2 hours when I would wake up paranoid.

I am definitely a mom. I love my child more than myself. I would do absolutely anything for her as long as it didn't compromise my faith. I have had my moment.

ps. I am happy to report that she is feeling MUCH better today!

Three

My sweet Lyla Rae is 3 months old today! People don't kid when they say time flies. I could never have dreamed how much I would love you. Being able to stay home with you everyday has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I love hanging out with you everyday and seeing the new things you do. You are so amazed at the world and I am just as amazed at YOU!

You still think EVERYTHING is funny! I LOVE seeing that sweet smile of yours

You have found your feet this month! You have already mastered a pretty awesome toe touch:)

We have new sleeping quarters for you. After battling a week of no sleep, we finally figured out, you did not want to sleep in your swing anymore. So, we have started letting you sleep in your pack and play newborn napper. You love it. The past few nights, you have slept over 8 hours! Go Lyla Go!

We have started taking you more places and you usually do pretty well out in public. I hope this continues into your toddler years!

You are sitting up like a big girl. You have always held your head up fairly well, but it is so sweet to see you actually sitting up:) you are not really interested in the toys we surround you with, but that'll come in time.

(sorry for the poor picture quality. Most of these pictures are taken on my phone because it is always with me)

Bath times have become a MUCH happier occasion. We have discovered Mr. Fish who keeps you warm during bath time. Since he has come into our lives, there have been no tears at bath time:)

You are wearing a size 1 diaper and still fitting into your 0-3 month clothes and can even still fit into some of your newborn clothes. You still eat about every 3 hours unless you are REALLY hungry and then it's every 2. You have the most darling personality and everyone loves you so much! It is a joy to be your mommy! Happy 3 months sweet girl!

The Swap

I have been looking forward to today for months! Like, "can't sleep the night before because you are so excited" excited! While I was pregnant, I discovered this consignment shop that sold only kids items and would only appear seasonly. Of course, I bought a few things then, but I didn't know what sizes Lyla would wear or what we would receive at showers. Well, once I heard they were coming back to town for the fall, I was the first to register for the presale, exclusive to new mommys only! I somehow talked Jeff into getting up at 7am to take Lyla and me and boy was it worth it:) I seriously bought her a whole fall/winter wardrobe complete with 2 jackets, long sleeve night gowns, sweaters, tights, and much much more! Here, see for yourself: (these are some of my favorites!)

I was so proud of Jeff. Not many men would go to a "Sweet Pea Swap" and wait patiently while their wife literally looked at EVERY. SINGLE. outfit on the rack! All in all we were there for about 2 hours. Lyla, of course, loved every minute of it:) She is my child after all, and she loves to shop:)
Afterwards, we went to cracker barrel where she wasn't quite as happy. She always seems to loose it when we sit down to eat. I guess she wanted a taste of my delicious apple crumble french toast. Either way, that trip was short lived and we finally headed home to take an afternoon nap. Unfortunately, she was the only one that slept. Ha.

Speaking of sleeping, there have been quite a few changes in that department at our house. First of all, for about a week, Lyla would wake up every two hours on the hour. This was so unusual for her as she usually only gets up once MAYBE twice a night. We tried EVERYTHING to fix this problem and finally came to the conclusion that maybe she was outgrowing her swing (which is where she normally sleeps at night). So, we have started swaddling her and letting her sleep on her back in her pack and play (which she USED to hate!) So far, so good!
(HA! This cracks me up!)- we have to use this kind of swaddle blanket that velcros because she will kick out of a blanket.

Back in our bedroom, some changes were trying to be made with Diggs seeing as how he has either thrown up or peed in our bed once a week for the past month. I am tired of spending money to send our comforter to the dry cleaners and trying to hand wash our mattress. So, I told Jeff yesterday he was DONE! He needed to sleep on the floor. Well, Ill let you see how that one turned out....

Yes, that is my husband laughing because he knows he caved! Granted Diggs was crying and circled the bed about 20 times last night practically pleading for us to include him. Oh well, tonight, it's tough love! (yeah right!)-apparently we don't know the meaning of that phrase seeing as how Lyla got a whole new wardrobe today and Diggs is still in our bed. LOL!

Can you say Mama?

Since I have the opportunity to stay at home with Lyla, we have the privilege of talking to each other A LOT! Lyla has started cooing and such and I just know ANY DAY NOW, she is going to look at me and just say Hey mom! :)

50 Rules for Dad's with Daughters

My cousin posted this on her blog and I LOVED it:) Wanted to share! As she had said, this made me think of the many wonderful memories I had with my dad and makes me excited to see Jeff and Lyla make their own memories together;)
(the original article and pictures can be found HERE)

50 RULES FOR DAD'S WITH DAUGHTERS:

1. Love her mom. Treat her mother with respect, honor, and a big heaping spoonful of public displays of affection. When she grows up, the odds are good she’ll fall in love with and marry someone who treats her much like you treated her mother. Good or bad, that’s just the way it is. I’d prefer good.

2. Always be there. Quality time doesn’t happen without quantity time. Hang out together for no other reason than just to be in each other’s presence. Be genuinely interested in the things that interest her. She needs her dad to be involved in her life at every stage. Don’t just sit idly by while she add years to her… add life to her years.

3. Save the day. She’ll grow up looking for a hero. It might as well be you. She’ll need you to come through for her over and over again throughout her life. Rise to the occasion. Red cape and blue tights optional.

4. Savor every moment you have together. Today she’s crawling around the house in diapers, tomorrow you’re handing her the keys to the car, and before you know it, you’re walking her down the aisle. Some day soon, hanging out with her old man won’t be the bees knees anymore. Life happens pretty fast. You better cherish it while you can.

5. Pray for her. Regularly. Passionately. Continually.

6. Buy her a glove and teach her to throw a baseball. Make her proud to throw like a girl… a girl with a wicked slider.

7. She will fight with her mother. Choose sides wisely.

8. Go ahead. Buy her those pearls.

9. Of course you look silly playing peek-a-boo. You should play anyway.

10. Enjoy the wonder of bath time.

11. There will come a day when she asks for a puppy. Don’t over think it. At least one time in her life, just say, “Yes.”

12. It’s never too early to start teaching her about money. She will still probably suck you dry as a teenager… and on her wedding day.

13. Make pancakes in the shape of her age for breakfast on her birthday. In a pinch, donuts with pink sprinkles and a candle will suffice.

14. Buy her a pair of Chucks as soon as she starts walking. She won’t always want to wear matching shoes with her old man.

15. Dance with her. Start when she’s a little girl or even when she’s a baby. Don’t wait ‘til her wedding day.

16. Take her fishing. She will probably squirm more than the worm on your hook. That’s OK.

17. Learn to say no. She may pitch a fit today, but someday you’ll both be glad you stuck to your guns.

18. Tell her she’s beautiful. Say it over and over again. Someday an animated movie or “beauty” magazine will try to convince her otherwise.

19. Teach her to change a flat. A tire without air need not be a major panic inducing event in her life. She’ll still call you crying the first time it happens.

20. Take her camping. Immerse her in the great outdoors. Watch her eyes fill with wonder the first time she sees the beauty of wide open spaces. Leave the iPod at home.

21. Let her hold the wheel. She will always remember when daddy let her drive.

22. She’s as smart as any boy. Make sure she knows that.

23. When she learns to give kisses, she will want to plant them all over your face. Encourage this practice.

24. Knowing how to eat sunflower seeds correctly will not help her get into a good college. Teach her anyway.

25. Letting her ride on your shoulders is pure magic. Do it now while you have a strong back and she’s still tiny.

26. It is in her nature to make music. It’s up to you to introduce her to the joy of socks on a wooden floor.

27. If there’s a splash park near your home, take her there often. She will be drawn to the water like a duck to a puddle.

28. She will eagerly await your return home from work in the evenings. Don’t be late.

29. If her mom enrolls her in swim lessons, make sure you get in the pool too. Don’t be intimidated if there are no other dads there. It’s their loss.

30. Never miss her birthday. In ten years she won’t remember the present you gave her. She will remember if you weren’t there.

31. Teach her to roller skate. Watch her confidence soar.

32. Let her roll around in the grass. It’s good for her soul. It’s not bad for yours either.

33. Take her swimsuit shopping. Don’t be afraid to veto some of her choices, but resist the urge to buy her full-body beach pajamas.

34. Somewhere between the time she turns three and her sixth birthday, the odds are good that she will ask you to marry her. Let her down gently.

35. She’ll probably want to crawl in bed with you after a nightmare. This is a good thing.

36. Few things in life are more comforting to a crying little girl than her father’s hand. Never forget this.

37. Introduce her to the swings at your local park. She’ll squeal for you to push her higher and faster. Her definition of “higher and faster” is probably not the same as yours. Keep that in mind.

38. When she’s a bit older, your definition of higher and faster will be a lot closer to hers. When that day comes, go ahead… give it all you’ve got.

39. Holding her upside down by the legs while she giggles and screams uncontrollably is great for your biceps. WARNING: She has no concept of muscle fatigue.

40. She might ask you to buy her a pony on her birthday. Unless you live on a farm, do not buy her a pony on her birthday. It’s OK to rent one though.

41. Take it easy on the presents for her birthday and Christmas. Instead, give her the gift of experiences you can share together.

42. Let her know she can always come home. No matter what.

43. Remember, just like a butterfly, she too will spread her wings and fly some day. Enjoy her caterpillar years.

44. Write her a handwritten letter every year on her birthday. Give them to her when she goes off to college, becomes a mother herself, or when you think she needs them most.

45. Learn to trust her. Gradually give her more freedom as she gets older. She will rise to the expectations you set for her.

46. When in doubt, trust your heart. She already does.

47. When your teenage daughter is upset, learning when to engage and when to back off will add years to YOUR life. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

48. Ice cream covers over a multitude of sins. Know her favorite flavor.

49. This day is coming soon. There’s nothing you can do to be ready for it. The sooner you accept this fact, the easier it will be.

50. Today she’s walking down the driveway to get on the school bus. Tomorrow she’s going off to college. Don’t blink.
